In the span of 24 hours, the Houthis attacked three US and British ships and shot down a US drone, and the US and UK carried out air strikes on Houthi-controlled areas, further escalating tensions in the Red Sea.

Yemeni Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a statement on the evening of the 19th local time that the Houthis attacked two US ships with missiles and hit them with precision.

The two American vessels were the Sea Champion and the Navis Fortuna.

In his statement, Mr. Sareya also said that the British cargo ship Rubymar, which had been hit, had been completely sunk.

The Rubymar, which is British-registered and flies the flag of the Central American country of Belize, was on its way from the port of Fakan in the United Arab Emirates to the port of Varna in Bulgaria.

According to reports, the Rubymar was about 56km from the Yemeni port of Mocha at the time of the incident, when it deviated from its course after being hit by at least three missiles and made contact with the Djibouti navy.

Earlier on the morning of the 19th local time in Yemen, Yemeni Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea issued a statement, Houthi armed forces in their control of Hodeidah province through the missile shot down a US MQ-9 "death" drone, and through the missile attack Rubymar cargo ship, causing serious damage to the ship.

According to the UK Maritime trade body, it has received reports that crew members have abandoned ship. This is the first time a crew member has been forced to abandon ship due to a Houthi attack. A statement from Yahya Sareya said the Houthis were responsible for the attack.

With the route still under threat from Houthi forces in Yemen, navigation in the Red Sea is not expected to resume in the short term. Masky's North American regional president said the company is telling customers it may need to continue using longer routes over the Cape in the third quarter of this year.
