On January 29. Japan Marine Network Shipping (ONE) announced that its ammonia-powered container ships have received approval in Principle (AiP). Following the investment in 12 methanol-powered container ships, this is another milestone on ONE's journey to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The 3.500TEU container ship, which received the AiP, was jointly developed by ONE, Nihon Shipyard and DNV Classification Society in late 2022. ONE has been studying the feasibility of ammonia as a zero-emission alternative fuel based on an alternative fuel roadmap developed in 2022. ONE participated in a GCMD-led pilot study on the safety of ammonia fuel filling.

Koshiro Wake, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability at ONE, said: "Ammonia is undoubtedly one of the main focuses of our research, as ammonia fuel has great potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional Marine fuels. We are very pleased with the progress we have made and will continue to study ammonia."

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, DNV's Regional Manager for Southeast Asia, Pacific and India, Maritime Division, said: "Ammonia as a promising future Marine fuel has great potential to decarbonise the shipping industry. We are confident that DNV's regulations for ammonia fuel will help our customers safely adopt this new fuel once the infrastructure is in place." We are very grateful to our joint development project partners who have entrusted us with this pioneering project that will help the entire maritime industry adopt ammonia as a Marine fuel."

The ONE Green Strategy sets an ambitious goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To achieve this, the transition from traditional to alternative fuels is defined as a key pillar of the ONE Green initiative. ONE will continue to research alternative fuels and aim to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
