On January 24. 2024. the naming ceremony of the HMMGarnet was held at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea.

In June 2021. HMM signed a formal contract with fellow shipbuilders Hanwha Marine and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to build 12 13.000-TEU container ships, with six ships each at the two yards.

HMM hopes to enhance its fleet's environmental capabilities by adding more than a dozen newly built 13.000 TEU container ships. These new ships are all designed to be powered by liquefied natural gas and feature advanced energy saving technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions.

Another distinguishing feature of these vessels is the use of the latest smart ship solutions. All operational data is transmitted in real time to HMM's fleet control center to ensure full monitoring of the ship's operating status.

Kyung Bae Kim, President and CEO of HMM, commented: "We hope that the new vessel will provide us with strong environmental credentials and flexibility in the face of increasing competition in the global market."

The HMM Garnet, flying the Liberian flag, is 335 meters long and 51 meters wide, according to data provided by VesselsValue.

Starting in February this year, HMM Garnet will be deployed on the East Coast 1 (EC1) route under the alliance's product program, with ports of call in Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Yantian, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah and Singapore.

After completing the delivery of 12 13.000 TEU vessels this year, HMM's fleet capacity is expected to reach 1 million TEU. In particular, large container ships of more than 10.000 TEU will account for 80% of HMM's entire fleet, enhancing the cost structure and operational efficiency of the company's fleet.
