India's container trade is facing increasing congestion due to disruption of navigation, shortage of equipment and inability of carriers to clear backlog of orders.

According to the country's freight forwarders, each shipping company faces "a shipping crisis on all trade routes and services in India.".

The source added that this is mainly due to the suspension of shipping on almost every trade route, "there are container clearance and transshipment on each ship", and the increasingly long booking list caused by the cancellation of the voyage, the aggravation of congestion of transshipment facilities, as well as the shortage of manpower and other operational problems, which have made the problem more and more serious.

But it is understood that shipping companies have adopted the industry's general strategy of cancelling flights, which they say is a response to reduced demand.

According to the liner database eesea, shipping companies have cancelled 24% of the capacity of the India Far East trade route this month and cancelled 23 of the 120 scheduled trips.

Next month, another 17% of the capacity is expected to be cancelled, and 17 flights have been announced.

Last week, Maersk announced the cancellation of services to India Far East Fs12 and fs13 during August, with the frequency actually falling from once a week to once every two weeks. "With sufficient capacity, we will reschedule to ensure the best efficiency and to ensure that the impact on customers is minimized," Maersk said

The Indian freight company questioned whether there was enough capacity and said there was a similar situation for trade routes to ports in North America and Europe, which were suspended every other week - "we understand that this situation may continue for three to four weeks.".

The source added that this had an impact on the booking and procurement of export containers.

"Even if there is a shipping schedule, carriers can't sign and issue bookings on real-time ships. Sometimes they will release shipping space in two to three weeks' advance voyage, but it is difficult to meet customers' requirements for immediate delivery. The current week's voyage booking has declined."

"This means that all carriers are flooded with bookings, and there are extreme shipping problems and a large number of bookings are rejected," one industry source said

At the same time, due to India's blockade restrictions, the problem of customs clearance for imported containers continues, which means that most carriers are facing "a serious shortage of inventory at almost all loading ports".

CMA CGM announced on Friday that it will readjust its Asian subcontinental Express (AS1) service next month, which will lead to a drop in the number of berths at Shekou and klnag ports in favor of new arrivals at Nhava Sheva, which may ease the pressure on Indian freight forwarders.

According to eesea, there are six ships in this route, with an average capacity of 8700teu. Among them, CMA CGM and COSCO are ship suppliers, and Maersk and OOCL occupy 10% of the shipping space respectively.
